Mozart’s Magic Flute

The Salem String Quartet will be collaborating with the Aquilon Music Festival at Linfield College. Performances are July 17,18,19, & 20, 2019 all at 7:30PM. Tickets available here!

“Die Zauberflöte has been interpreted as a fairy-tale, as the fight between good and evil or as the triumph of light over darkness. In our approach, the Queen of the Night, traditionally the ‘bad woman’ of the story, who “chatters much and does little”, as said by Sarastro’s cronies, is but a mother trying desperately to rescue her kidnapped daughter. Pamina, the daughter, and the ‘clean cut’ Prince Tamino, whom she helps to enter the realm of “superior men”, have plenty to learn about accepting the seduction of lofty philosophies. And then, Mozart and his librettist Shikanaeder make us wonder: Are the untouched, unsophisticated ‘nature couple’ of Papageni, that do not think but of the fruits of mating, the redeeming element of the story?”
